Course Aims & Objectives:

To give all persons intending to go to sea the education and training in personal safety and social responsibilities to meet the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements to comply with emergency procedures, take precautions to prevent pollution or the maritime environment, observe working practices, contribute to effective communications on board ship, contribute to effective human relationships on board ship and understand and take necessary actions to control fatigue.

Learning Outcomes

  • How to comply with emergency procedures on board a vessel.
  • How to take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment.
  • How to follow safe working practices.
  • How to contribute to effective communications onboard ship.
  • How to contribute to effective human relationships onboard ship.
  • Understand the causes of fatigue and knows the necessary actions to control fatigue

Assessment Plan:

The learning and assessment process at Trident Maritime Academy is designed to be inclusive and supportive, ensuring that all participants are assessed consistently and fairly in line with ISO9001 standards. Throughout the course, assessments are conducted continuously through observation, oral questioning, simulations, and role-playing activities, allowing for the effective monitoring of progress against defined learning outcomes. To formally evaluate participants’ knowledge and comprehension, a structured assessment will be administered at the end of the course. This assessment will last 30 minutes and include a combination of multiple-choice questions and brief written responses, verifying that key competencies and objectives are met.

Course Aims & Objectives:

To give those onboard ship who do not have a designated security duty the essential education and training in security awareness to meet the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements to contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness, recognise security threats and understand the need for, and methods of maintaining security awareness and vigilance.

Candidate Learning Outcomes

  • The importance of ship security and the roles of those involved in its provision.
  • The requirements and measures to maintain ship security.
  • Be able to recognise and report a security threat.

Course Pre-requisites:

Personnel attending this course are required to be at least 16 years of age. For the STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting course you must be fit to participate in all aspects of the training, in particular to be aware pf the physically demanding nature of some of the exercises during the fire fighting drills.

100% attendance is required for this course

What You Must Bring:

  • A passport, national ID card or seaman’s discharge book must be presented upon arrival & before assessment.
  • Two pairs of thick long socks to wear under your issued fire boots.
  • T-shirt and long trousers or leggings to wear under your fire suit. Natural fibres are best and clothing that will not be tainted by smoke. No jeans or seamed trousers permitted; they’re not comfortable.
  • No piercings, rings, watches or jewellery allowed to be worn; this is for your own safety since metal will heat up in the container. Please leave all valuables at home.
  • Persons with full beards or stubble are advised to trim closely to ensure a full-face seal can be achieved. If a full seal cannot be achieved, you can’t continue with the hot drills & therefore will not achieve your learning outcome.
  • Strictly no make-up, lotions or suntan creams to be worn throughout the course. These damage the delicate seals on the breathing apparatus and therefore it is a strict rule.
  • Bring two litres of water each day to keep hydrated; you will also need a packed lunch for each day.

Course Aims & Objectives:

To give all persons intending to go to sea the education and training in fire prevention and firefighting to meet the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements to minimise the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire. To fight and extinguish fires.      

Candidate Learning Outcomes

  • Understand and can minimise the risk of fire on board.
  • The on board equipment, procedures and personal safety requirements in fire situations.
  • Able to fight and extinguish fires.

During the course, participants will undergo continuous assessment through structured observation, oral questioning, simulation exercises, and role-playing. These evaluations are designed to verify that learning outcomes are consistently achieved, meeting defined quality criteria. A final, formal assessment will be conducted to objectively evaluate participants’ knowledge and comprehension. This assessment will consist of a 30-minute written test, featuring a blend of multiple-choice questions and short written responses, to confirm that the required competencies and understanding have been met.

Course Registration and Timings

Starts at 0900 prompt & finishes at approximately 1300

100% attendance is required for this course

What You Must Bring:

  • A passport, national ID card or seaman’s discharge book must be presented upon arrival & before assessment.
  • Bring a T-Shirt and either shorts or leggings to wear in the water during the wet drill, underneath which you must wear swimwear.
  • Bring your own towel; preferably two for comfort
  • Bring Flip flops for poolside usage only
  • Bring a change of loose comfortable easy to put on clothes, so you depart dry and warm.
  • No piercings, rings, watches or jewellery allowed to be worn; this is for your own safety to prevents accidents. Please leave all valuables at home.
  • You will need a light packed meal between the theory and wet drills
  • Mobile phones are not permitted at the wet drill pool area.

Course Aims & Objectives:

To give all persons intending to go to sea the education and training in personal survival techniques to meet the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements to survive at sea in the event of a ship abandonment.

Candidate Learning Outcomes

  • The main types of maritime emergencies
  • The survival equipment used during a maritime emergency
  • The principals of survival during a maritime emergency
  • How to abandon ship during a maritime emergency
  • How to be able to survive in the water during a maritime emergency
  • Know how to use the survival craft during a maritime emergency

What You Must Bring:

  • This course focuses on practical exercises; all candidates must wear casual comfortable clothing that is suitable to undertake activities such as bending, kneeling and lying on the floor.

Course Aims & Objectives:

To give all persons intending to go to sea the education and training in elementary first aid to meet the knowledge, understanding and proficiency requirements to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency. 

Candidate Learning Outcomes

  • Types of accidents and emergencies on board that may require first aid to be administrated and the types of casualties that may arise.
  • Methods of raising the alarm and the manor and timing would relate to different degrees of accident or emergency.
  • Immediate measures to be taken when accidents or medical emergencies occur.
  • Prioritise actions required when providing first aid.
  • Importance of minimizing the risk of further harm to self and casualty.
  • Body structure and functions relating to elementary first aid.
  • Identify emergency first aid equipment and demonstrate its use, including improvising of bandages.
  • Maintenance of airways, breathing and circulation in a casualty requiring resuscitation and an unconscious or choking casualty.
  • Cause and recognition of shock and demonstrate its management.
  • Types of bleeding and demonstrate their control and management.
  • Cause & recognition of burns, scalds and accidents caused by electrical current & demonstrate their management.
  • Correct positioning of a casualty according to the injury.
  • Identify casualty rescue transportation techniques.
